History

General diagram of SAR Class-B locomotive

The Class-B is the "classic" locomotive of the NZASM (or Nederlandsche-Zuid-Afrikaansche Spoorweg-Maatschappij) of the Transvaal Republic. In their original ownership they were called "46 tonners". 175 entered service betwen 1893 and 1898, when hostilities of the second war of independence (AKA Boer War) stopped the import of more. During the war catured locomotives transferred ownershipto the Imperial Miliaray Railways (IMR). After the war (31-May-1902) ownership transferred to the Central South African Railways and then at Union in 1910, to the South African Railways (SAR). While, it was scrapped in SAR service, many saw long service as industrial locomotives.

The diagram here comes from Bernard Zurnamer's 1970 book "The locomotives of the South Aftrican Railways" which was published to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the SAR and 110 years of railways in South Africa.

Modelling

From a modelling perspective the locomotive presensts a few challenges, which I'm not ready to deal with just yet. Therefore, I'd like to keep this for revisiting at a later date.
